Vilma Bader was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Visual Arts) at Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney in 2013 on an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) scholarship. Her research based practice consists of personal histories and universal issues framed by linguistics and semiotics. In recent years her work has become increasingly about localities and communities elsewhere. This takes the form of cross-cultural storytelling and has taken the artist to various overseas locations to undertake artist residencies for both her research and studio work. A recurring theme in Bader works is how we see and understand our place in the world. Textile and the physicality of the handmade are important components in the artist’s work.
During the residency, Vilma Bader will work on the project, which weave together histories, stories, rituals and memories which will in turn expand broader ideas around communal life, cultural and historical heritage. It will not be an attempt to excavate solutions, but rather an immersive exploration, an active but non-intrusive attempt towards an archaeology of ‘things’.
