On Wednesday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m., we invite you to the workshop “Getting to Know the Object” at SODAS 2123, led by artist Marikki Nyfors.
Marikki Nyfors is a Finnish artist currently participating in the Resistance Song Residency at SODAS 2123. The workshop ‘Getting to know an object’ draws on the question of objecthood that consistently accompanies her artistic research, and her project ‘Rapunzel of Finland’ she is carrying out at SODAS 2123 on identity, fiction and reality, fairytales, songs, storytelling, consumerism, and the deep desire to belong.
‘Getting to know an object‘ becomes a movement and relationship practice where coincidences are invited in with delight but not without care.
The workshop will be led in English and take place over 2 hours, the first half dedicated to movement practices in relation to brought objects, evolving the exploration into exchange through conversation, working with songs, lyrics and memories.
→ Participation is free, no registration is needed.
Participants are invited to bring:
〇 an object (physically);
〇 a song (in your mind).
The object can be of any size, shape, purpose. The object can be something meaningful and interesting to you, or it can be something you use or relate to casually.
The song should be something that has meaning to you already – through its lyrics, feeling, memories etc. Is there a song that makes you feel like you belong (and why)? Which song makes you feel like home (and why)? Or is there a song that makes you feel the opposite?
An excerpt of a story told about a previous encounter with a performing object, a plastic rocking horse I met on the streets of Brussels:
“It happened that I was already working with the movement of galloping pre-encountering the horse. It feels meaningful, it is bittersweet. I work with a song, ‘Juokse Sinä Humma’, that sings repeatedly, ‘run you horsey’, and it feels an act of cruelty to sing the song to a horse without legs. I change the lyrics not only to better understand the object but to be more considerate of it. I also realise it is more likely for the horse to know English than Finnish – it is engraved on the horse, ‘Little Tikes’ [USA toy company] – and so I get to know the horse’s tongue without it being able to open its mouth.”
Marikki Nyfors works with contemporary dance, performance, music, storytelling, writing, and film. She graduated from the STUDIOS MA program at P.A.R.T.S. in 2024. Inspired by songs, objects, personal narratives, language, and play, she creates works for audiences of different ages. Her multidisciplinary practice seeks for emotional engagement. Marikki loves collage, playground slides, the organ, and desperately finding meaning in connections and coincidences. In her textual and sound-based work, she often employs sampling — interweaving familiar references and intertextual elements into new compositions.
On 13th of May, Marikki Nyfors will introduce a performance drawing from her research project ‘Rapunzel of Finland’ at the CAC Reading Room together with Helena Pulkkinen.
Resistance Song Residency explores the political, social, and affective dimensions of song, examining how collective singing can foster solidarity, healing, and shared ritual. The spring cycle of the residency is curated by Vaida Stepanovaitė.
Resistance Song Residency is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture.
SODAS 2123 activities are supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius city municipality.
