The exhibition “Mirage”, curated by Emilis Benediktas Šeputis, a participant of SODAS 2123’s “Beginner Curators’ Platform”, and Jonas Meškauskas will open on Friday, August 29, at 7 pm in the “Borgo” building (formerly the Vilnius College of Finance and Credit, Naugarduko St. 5, Vilnius).
In the work of today’s young generation of artists, tensions arising from an encounter with an uncertain future are becoming increasingly unavoidable. Sensory aesthetic forms become less a means of accessing essence and more signposts toward hollowing structures of meaning, in which a longing saturated with doubt lingers.
Here, the mirage manifests as a state between the possibility of taking root and the necessity of retreat – between circumstances and personal choices that have led to the artists’ current path.
“Mirage” explores themes of appearance, impermanence, and the deception of the senses. Dreaminess, uncertainty, and liminality intertwine – states in which perception begins to waver and reality blurs.
The exhibition space – an abandoned building of the former college of finance – acts as an active participant: its offices and corridors are imbued with traces of the past, to which the artworks respond and into which they intervene.
The artists’ works – installations, objects, sound pieces – are connected in a network, guided by sensory disruptions, rhythms of scale, and rhythms of media. The display is non-linear: the viewer is invited to wander, trust intuition, and pause where something resonates.
“Mirage” is also a project of kinship. Many of the participants are linked by ties of friendship, shared imagination, or collective work. This exhibition is an independent artist-led initiative that unites not only artworks but also relationships.
