“Playground” is a series of seasonal playgrounds and play-related programming. Launched in 2025, this educational project brings together visual art, architecture, and public space: each warm season, a new sculptural installation – a playground – appears on the SODAS 2123 grounds, accompanied by an educational programme for school-age children developed by curator Vilius Vaitiekūnas.
The “Playground” project examines the contribution visual culture creators can make to the development of children’s play spaces in the city, moving beyond conventional urban infrastructure to bring in creative and educational solutions. The initiative responds to urban communities’ need for socially meaningful and sustainable public spaces – spaces not only for play but for learning, for building a connection with the environment, and for developing new models of collaboration among cultural practitioners, architects, urban communities, and organisations from different fields.
As traditional clay architecture fades from architectural vocabulary and practice, and urban development becomes almost unimaginable without concrete and plastic, the 2025 edition, “Clay Playground”, called for a return to clay as a tool for building and play. In 2026, the playground “tik tak tok”, conceived by artist Beatričė Mockevičiūtė and architect Justinas Dūdėnas, adapted the game of noughts and crosses to sunlight, inviting a return to the cyclical rhythm dictated by sun and earth.
