Agnieszka Popielak is an architect and stage designer from Poland. She studied Architecture and Urban planning at Cracow University of Technology and École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble, andStage Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. She gained professional experience working with multiple architecture studios, such as Active City Transformation (Copenhagen), Marchi Architectes (Paris), Openfabric (Rotterdam), Chris Collaris Architects (Amsterdam), Studio Kontent (Warsaw). She also participated in several film projects as a stage designer. Currently, she is collaborating with Anouk Vogel landscape architecture studio (Amsterdam) as a freelance architect, and developing her own creative practice at the intersection of fields – architecture, scenography and visual arts. Recently in her work, she focuses on notions of contextual architecture in the natural sites and intuitive creative processes such as improvisation techniques.

During her residency at SODAS 2123, Agnieszka will research experimental music notations – visual records of avant-garde sound explorations by composers such as John Cage, Brian Eno, Iannis Xenakis, Toshi Ichiyanagi. These drawings were often vague instructions for the music performers, giving them the structural essence of the piece, however leaving freedom for improvisation. Agnieszka will translate these drawings into the language of space, imaginary universes, nonexisting landscapes. The main aim is to explore how forms and concepts freely created by the subconscious, can be translated to the language of architecture, as a process-oriented creation practice.

SODAS 2123 residency program supported by Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius city municipality.
