Suvi Kemppainen is an internationally working choreographer, dancer, and performance artist based in Helsinki. Kemppainen’s artistic works are anchored in their practice around fantastic psychopoetic corporeality, embodied knowledge, immaterial ownership and reframing the concept of spectacle.
After graduating as a dancer from North Karelia College Outokumpu in Finland Suvi Kemppainen continued their choreography studies at the University of Arts Berlin HZT. Their works have been presented at the Ateneum Art Museum, Zodiak Center for New Dance, Viirus Theatre Helsinki; Contemporary Art Space Kutomo, Turku; the Sophiensaele and Ballhaus Ost; Berlin.
At the Sodas 2123 residency, Suvi will explore drumming as a posture, drawing inspiration from the figure of the drummer as an analogy for the body: a sounding bony structure that creates its own unruly polyrhythmic symphonies. In parallel, they will develop a separate line of research into digital sound design, exploring ways of composing sound for the stage.
Suvi’s residency has been made possible through an exchange programme with Titanik Residency in Turku.
SODAS 2123 activities are supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius City Municipality.
